Torekovs GC - "A true links course, created by the rough and with beautifully placed bunkers".
At the far end of the Bjäre peninsula, golf has been played since the early 1900s when summer visitors hit balls on the area next to the beach. It was no surprise then that Torekovs GK was founded in 1924, with a primitive nine hole course opening the following year. It took almost 50 years before Torekov, in 1974, got 18 holes.
In the 1980s the club acquired more land and with the help of Jan Sederholm the course was extended and rebuilt, and during the winter of 2011 it has once again been given an overhaul. Torekovs golf course may not be one of the longer courses in the country, but in the prevailing wind it is a tough test and offers a fantastic experience.
The hazards on the course are not just pretty, they are also strategically located, making the player think carefully about which club to choose. Many players have stepped up on the first tee, thinking they are going to crush the course, but a few hours later it’s often the other way around…
The golf club wants to create a feel of how the land around the course used to look way back when, and they have taken great efforts in making the 'links feel' of the course more pronounced. A few years ago the club took stock of the flora, identifying biologically valuable biotopes needing preservation. The environmental aspect of course management is important to the club and the old common is treated with subtle intuition and great care by course manager Mikael Kullenberg and his staff.
Torekovs GK has a purposeful and long-term view of course development, which has resulted, in recent years, in the course being presented in fabulous condition. The unique location also means that it usually can stay open all year round.
